In many companies the Pick-and-Place machine is considered to be the heart of the SMD-production line. But isn’t it true that these days every Pick-and-Place machine will perform satisfactorily whether it is for quantities of 1,000 parts per hour or for quantities of 100,000 parts per hour? Therefore shouldn’t the “heart” of the produc-tion line with all its connections and links to other machines be converted into the smart centre of the SMD-production line? Today a Pick-and-Place machine that ef-fectively uses all its available input to optimise the total production throughput will guarantee an efficient and high quality production environment.
When starting an SMT production the first thing to consider is the design of a PCB board. Today’s boards are designed with one of the many CAD-programs. The CAD-data contains the exact placement co-ordinates for the components on the board. It would therefore be ideal to use this CAD-data on your Pick & Place ma-chine. One of the DIMA software tools is a generic post processor that can convert not just one format, but any CAD-file into a file that the DIMA Pick & Place machine can use for the placement of components. This eliminates the time consuming manual teaching of a board and increases the accuracy level.
Before an SMT production can start components have to be bought and they arrive at the warehouse. In order to keep track of where the components are and how many of them still are available, DIMA offers a stock database software that enables you to follow every component through your facility from the warehouse to the Pick & Place machine and back to the warehouse and all intermediate positions you can think of. Furthermore it will collect the latest quantity status of your component in order for you not only to know where your components are, but even to know how many of them are still available. With this you generate a failure free component registration.
In an SMT production-line machine downtime is a necessity because of the need to changeover in production. However it should be kept to a minimum. To make the production changeover as effective as possible the operator needs to be very ex-perienced, or needs some help with receiving all necessary information. The DIMA Production Optimisation Software therefore will provide the operator with informa-tion about which components and tools are needed for a certain production run. It even supplies an optimal feeder set-up plan for one or several boards in order to achieve the fastest possible production rate.
Monitoring the production can be pretty difficult especially in Pick & Place machines with multiple pick up heads. The Dima software however takes care of the detection and registration of every possible interruption or failure during production.
Finally the DIMA Production Optimisation Software can even trace back each single component on every board produced. This is better know as full batch trace-ability. It means that if, for instance, a failure is detected in a specific component after 7 months it is easy to trace back on which board and at which location on the board this specific component is being placed.
